Pastoral care at Mowden Hall is best compared to a warm Dime Bar – comforting on the outside, with a strong and structured core. The outer layer, like the chocolate coating, represents the warmth and support offered by the entire school community.
Every individual – staff and pupils alike – plays a role in ensuring that children feel safe, valued, and supported. The environment is one of genuine care and attentive listening. Communication flows freely among teachers, parents, support staff, and kitchen staff, enabling early identification and resolution of any issues a child may face.
At the heart of this support lies a solid framework – comparable to the Dime Bar’s crunchy centre – designed to provide structure, uphold high moral standards, and instil a clear sense of right and wrong.
This framework gives children the guidance, consistency, and boundaries they need to grow confidently and responsibly in a rapidly changing world. Mistakes are seen as part of the learning journey; what matters is the system in place to help them make things right and grow from the experience.
Pupils at Mowden Hall are encouraged to be self-aware, confident, inquisitive, and empathetic. They are taught to consider others’ perspectives, make informed choices, and develop resilience. When setbacks occur, children know they have a network of trusted adults ready to listen, support, and help them rebuild. They are continually encouraged to reflect and learn, preparing them not only for academic success but for life beyond the school gates.
The school believes that happy, secure, and confident children are best placed to thrive. With Form Tutors at the core of its pastoral model and in close partnership with parents, Mowden Hall lays the strongest possible foundations for every child to learn, develop, and flourish.
The school’s House system is central to fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie. There are four Houses, named after notable Northumbrians: Bewick, Collingwood, Grey, and Stephenson. Upon joining the Prep School, each pupil is allocated to a House, remaining part of that community throughout their time at Mowden Hall.
Houses meet regularly for social events, competitions, and communal dining. Each House is led by a pupil House Captain and a staff Head of House. House Points are awarded across all areas of school life and contribute to a termly competition. The House system helps develop leadership, teamwork, and cross-age friendships that enhance the school’s family-like atmosphere.
Nutrition and mealtime experience are given high importance at Mowden Hall. Meals are freshly prepared on-site by our catering partners Thomas Franks. The school promotes a healthy, balanced diet through carefully curated menus, with the entire school community dining together in House groups. Every meal ends with a moment of formality, and pupils take turns serving one another, reinforcing good manners and mutual respect.
Breakfast offerings include porridge, cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurt, toast, fruit juice, and a rotating hot or continental option. Lunch includes both meat and vegetarian main courses with fresh vegetables, alongside a soup option in winter and a comprehensive salad bar from Year 3 onwards. A dessert or fresh fruit is served afterwards.
Snacks are provided mid-morning and afternoon – ranging from fruit and milk to sandwiches, crumpets, and flapjacks – ensuring pupils remain energised throughout the day. Supper consists of a hot meal with both meat and vegetarian options, fresh vegetables, salads, bread, and a dessert or fruit selection. The school operates a ‘nut and seed free’ policy and requests that families support this by refraining from sending in products containing nuts or seeds.
