That’s why we’re proud to be work in partnership with Thomas Franks, a family-owned catering company with a global reputation for serving exceptional food made from locally sourced produce.
Thomas Franks work with many of the world’s leading schools, but also have an extensive presence in business and industry with clients such as Autotrader, Barings, Britvic, Burberry, Cushman & Wakefield, Dentons, Edinburgh Airport, PZ Cussons, Somerset County Cricket Club and Withers.
Together, we are committed to offering a rich, varied dining experience that fuels our pupils throughout the day. We place great emphasis on the connection between food and mood. Our pupils enjoy a wide selection of wholesome meals and snacks designed to keep them feeling their best-both physically and mentally. Our menus are carefully planned to provide a healthy, balanced diet, with fresh meals cooked on site by our dedicated catering team.
At Mowden Hall, food is part of our community culture. Pupils eat together in house groups, and meals have a formal end. Good manners are actively encouraged, and each house takes turns serving and waiting on one another—an important part of our ethos of respect and responsibility.
For breakfast, boarders can choose from a hot buffet, a wide range of cereals, yoghurts, pastries and fruit.
Lunch is served to all, where pupils can expect three or four hot options, a selection of side dishes and an extensive salad bar. We offer three or four choices for pudding, including fresh fruit.
The range is slightly smaller for dinner, but we aim to serve pupils’ favourite dishes, ensuring they are well-fuelled for their co-curricular commitments.
In addition to the core menu, the Thomas Franks chef team will host regular pop-ups so pupils can explore the foods of the world. These could include sushi-making workshops, pasta bars, mezze nights, Mexican fiestas and the much-loved smoothie bike.
Thomas Franks has comprehensive food allergy and special diet policy which provides clear procedures for the identification and management of allergies and dietary requirements. All their schools have a ‘nut-aware’ policy.
The Mowden Hall team receive comprehensive and up-to-date training on current legislation, and clear instructions on how to carry out allergen management procedures. Dishes containing allergens are segregated from other dishes in the kitchen and on the counters, preventing cross-contamination wherever possible.
Thomas Franks work closely with Mowden parents to fully understand the needs of each pupil. The parents of pupils with life-threatening allergies are invited to meet with the catering manager to agree on a bespoke allergy management plan.
Our catering partner, Thomas Franks, works closely with trusted local suppliers. All meat is British and Red Tractor assured; fish is sustainably sourced and MSC certified. Where possible, British-grown fruit and vegetables are used. Fair Trade products are supported, free-range eggs are a standard, and dairy comes from British farms.
Alongside nutritious meals, we support our pupils in developing healthy sleep routines, recognising that rest is as vital as food for overall wellbeing.
