We are delighted that Mowden Hall School has once again been included in the Tatler Schools Guide 2027, which celebrates leading schools across the UK.

Selection for the Tatler Schools Guide is a mark of high distinction within independent education. Renowned for its impartial and rigorous reviews, the guide handpicks schools that deliver not only academic excellence, but also an enriched and well-rounded school experience.

Highlighting the school’s welcoming atmosphere and holistic educational ethos, the Tatler review notes:

“Drive up the long track to Mowden Hall and you’ll be observed by friendly sheep peering over the fences; and despite being just 15 miles from Newcastle, the school emanates a sense of rural calm. The boys and girls (generally, but not exclusively, drawn from across the North and Scotland) are given free rein to explore any budding interest, be it golf, the dissection club or simply getting muddy and splashing in puddles. In 2026, Mowden Hall is the largest it’s ever been, its 200-strong pupil body now able to start from two years old at The Nest nursery – launched last September – and leave after Year 8, when pupils head to destinations as varied as Sedbergh in the North or to Eton and Radley in the South.”

Expressing his pride in the school’s recognition, Headteacher Phil Sturt said:

“We are absolutely thrilled to feature once again in the Tatler Schools Guide. To be included among the top prep schools in the UK is a wonderful endorsement of our tremendous school and warm and vibrant community.

The Tatler Schools Guide 2027 is published in the October 2026 edition of Tatler, which is availble to purchase now. Mowden’s review can be found on page 123.
