This year, the school celebrated the theme Reading for Pleasure, highlighting how books can inspire enjoyment well beyond the classroom.
The week kicked off with the Prep School Librarians delighting the youngest pupils during the Pre Prep assembly by reading The Tiger Who Came to Tea. Judith Kerr’s much-loved story, featuring the unforgettable tiger with his extraordinary appetite, captivated children and set a joyful tone for the celebrations. Across the school, pupils joined in a Famous Five-themed treasure hunt, following clues inspired by Enid Blyton’s adventurous tales.
One of the highlights was Tuesday’s special reading sessions, which evoked memories of the classic BBC programme Jackanory. Dubbed “Mowdenory”, staff members including Mr Lamb, Mrs Knight, Mrs Henry, Nurse Laura, Mr Shaw Kew, Mr Smith, Miss Serbrock, Mrs Ball, Mrs Fairclough, and Mrs Mackie brought stories to life for pupils, capturing their imaginations with vivid performances.
“Listening to a good reader is one of the great pleasures of childhood,” said Mrs Jo Phillipson, Head of English and Drama at Mowden Hall School.
“A well-told story brings characters to life and draws children into new worlds. Hearing stories read aloud helps develop understanding of language, rhythm, and expression, while also nurturing imagination and curiosity.”
In Pre Prep, pupils enjoyed dressing up as their favourite storybook characters, from classic fairytale figures to adventurous heroes. Their colourful costumes added a touch of magic and enthusiasm to the day, as children shared stories and celebrated reading together.
Mrs Phillipson also wished to thank parents for their role in fostering a love of reading at home.
She added: “Whether sharing a bedtime story, listening to your child read, or simply talking about books, these moments are vital in helping children develop a lifelong love of reading.”
