British Science Week is a national celebration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, organised by the British Science Association. The annual event encourages schools, communities and organisations across the UK to explore the impact of science in everyday life and to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators.
The school’s celebrations began with an inspiring research challenge led by Year 8 pupils. The girls guided mixed-age teams in researching a female STEM “superhero”. Each group produced an informative poster highlighting their chosen scientist’s journey, achievements and the lasting impact of her work on science and technology.
Later in the week, Year 7 pupils took centre stage with an impromptu outdoor science show that delighted their audience. Demonstrations included exploding poppers, the classic Coke and Mentos reaction, floating tattoos and disappearing ink. One particularly memorable moment saw pupils apparently transform water into “wine”, prompting amazement and laughter from the crowd.
The Science Department also welcomed young visitors from the Pre Prep, as Year 1 and Year 2 pupils experienced the excitement of a real laboratory environment. After watching a spectacular Elephant’s Toothpaste demonstration, the children carried out their own experiment, creating erupting volcanoes complete with flowing lava.
Thursday evening saw the school host a lively STEM Roadshow presented by Gordon Montgomery from Oundle School Outreach. Through a series of mathematical tricks, puzzles and demonstrations, Montgomery captivated the audience and left many eager to try the challenges at home.
The week concluded with a fascinating assembly from Christoph Oing, Honorary Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care. Dr Oing shared insights into his work in cancer research and treatment, explaining how progress in science often depends on persistence, including testing ideas, learning from failure and refining approaches to develop new innovations and life-saving therapies.
Reflecting on the success of the week, the Head, Phil Sturt, said: “British Science Week is a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to experience the excitement of discovery. From our youngest learners to our senior pupils, it was inspiring to see such enthusiasm, creativity and curiosity throughout the school. Events like this help show pupils that science is not only fascinating, but also vital in shaping the future.”
